Hands On With Adventure Time: Pirates Of The Enchiridion-E3 2018

Two of my favorite shows that were on Cartoon Network of the last few years were Regular Show and Adventure Time. Regular Show ended but adventure Time is still going strong and now we might have gotten the one of the better games in the series, Pirates of the Enchiridion.

Long story short the Ice King somehow caused his mountains to melt and flood the land of Ooo and thus turned it into the seas of Ooo. Join Finn and Jke along with friends they gather along their journey as they try and fix what the Ice King has screwed up. You’ll get the chance to drive a boat and sing sea shanties with your favorite boy and dog but the shanties aren’t just songs, they are hints that tell you where to go next in your journey. This is a clever idea to help the players along in the story without giving information out obviously.

The game is part RPG/part adventure-exploration game. You’ll be able to collect loot along the journey to help make the adventure easier such as Banana pirate guards that you’ll have to fight at sea and other places are weak to ice. You’ll find ice items/weapons during the adventure that will make fighting the banana guards a synch. You’ll also be able to upgrade your characters during the adventure by winning battles like a typical RPG. You’ll also have the option to upgrade all kinds of things that relate to your character like weapons to make battles much easier.

That won’t be much of an issue early in the journey but your party will eventually consist of Finn, Jake, BMO, and Marceline the Vampire Queen so you’ll have to fight and win with all of them as well as learn what each one does well and makes them a viable part of the team! Each team member has a Ultimate Hero Ability that each character has a different way of collecting energy to use. You might need Marceline to finish off the enemies or Jake to take damage to store power for the Ultimate Hero Ability. One interesting feature in the game is that you can interrogate certain characters during the adventure.

What I mean is you can play “good cop, bad cop” with Finn and Jake and see if you can get information out of say the Ice King to find out what happened to the ice mountains. Another example is you can interrogate the banana guards at the castle and not have to fight them in battle if you get the information you’re looking to hear. However, you’re trying to gain experience so fighting them is probably a good idea early in the game. During the game, you’ll also have the ability to go on quests just like in role-playing games!

One of my favorite parts of the demo was the sea shanties like in the show where signing is a vital part of the show. The voice cast from the show is back for the game and that adds to the game even more than the great gameplay. The writing in the game feels like I was watching an episode of the show with the humor coming out. The references to the show are spot on as well like when one of the characters you’re fighting can get “poo brain” as an example. The demo was shown on a TV screen but I also saw the Nintendo Switch version and it sounds and looks just as good. The Off-TV mode isn’t laggy at all and it looks just as vibrant as it does on a TV. Outright Games added to the Cartoon Network fun by giving out a Cartoon Network backpack that looks really cool and I’d like to thank them for that!
