Oh My Godheads Review

I recently got my hands on a review code from the fine folks at Titutitech for their multiplayer game, Oh My Godheads. This game is absolute chaos where anything can happen at anytime. There are quite a few game modes that you can play that will ruin friendships if you’re playing with your friends.

Basically the game plays like a giants version of capture the flag but instead of grabbing the flag, you have to get your hands on one of the various “Godheads” of the level. Each level has a different level that is unique the level or you can pick the one you would like to hunt down during gameplay. You have a certain amount of time to grab the Godhead and get it to your goal on the other side of the map, before the Godhead loses it and starts to go crazy. What I mean by go crazy is the controls will start to change and you’ll start to feel the effects of the Godhead going crazy.

The controls will become the opposite of what they normally were and this becomes a real issue when you’re trying to get to the goal in a hurry and not get killed by your competition. Controls are pretty simple but to get really good will take some time. The only control issue I had was deflecting pies and other weapons. You’re able to throw exploding pies at your enemies like grenades and mastering the exploding pies could be your ticket to victory. Each map plays differently and you’ll need to learn quickly what each map does.

One map has ice shards getting shot at you and you could freeze at any moment and the jungle has slow-down effects that change the way you play. The jungle also has a switch in the middle of the level that you need to hit to open the goal to allow you to place the Godhead inside. When you’re playing with friends, you’ll have to work together, as a team, to get the Godhead to the plinth/goal so you can win and the only way might be to throw a perfect pass to your teammate before the Godhead goes crazy! You’ll find yourself getting the hang of the gameplay after the first few plays but the first few will be mostly trial and error to see what each level has in store for you and to see what each weapon does.

Like most fighting games like this, each weapon does something different, such as the exploding pies I mentioned before. You’ll have to master combat with the weapons you’re dealt so you might be fighting with a sword or with a grenade like launcher and that could be the perfect weapon for the situation! As I mentioned before, there are multiple gameplay modes such as Capture the Head which is basically capture the flag that you play with a head instead of a flag. There are four other gameplay modes to choose from in the menu and they are: King of the Head where you gain points for holding the Godhead, Headhunters, where you need to kill a certain number of players, Last Man Standing is where you need to survive and be the last player standing.

The last mode was a Trials/objective system where you need to achieve certain tasks like killing a certain number of enemies in a certain amount of time. There will be other challenges to achieve in the trials system so be on guard for anything to come your way! There a few fighters to pick from but they are basically the same control wise but aesthetically look different.

My favorite was the Penguin with the monocle, Sir Fishelsworth, but there were all kinds of playable characters. They range from the skeleton named Dave to a ninja named Aoi. You and your friends can be broken into one of four teams for combat but a MAJOR issue is that there isn’t online play. In this era of gaming, online play should be automatic especially for a fighting game like this. I get the whole play with your friends in the same area thing but being able to play against people in other places as well as your friends adds a whole other element to a genre like this. Combine that with the subpar AI when you play solo (I know that isn’t the selling point of the game) and that hinders the game slightly. The simplistic controls and lovely graphical style make the game charming. The music adds to it and makes you feel like something is going to go down and each level theme fits the area perfectly. I’m giving Oh My Godheads for the PlayStation 4 a 7.5 out of 10 but how can you not like a Penguin wearing a monocle? I would like to thank Titutitech for the review code.
