Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 Review

I don’t have to tell you how interesting the Lego series games are as they take some of the most popular franchises in pop culture and put a Lego spin on them. From the likes of Batman and Star Wars, it feels like Lego has done it all. This time around, the Marvel Super Hero universe is getting another shot in the second installment of the series, in Lego form. A word of advice, don’t lose the instructions that come with the kits, it will be a bitch to build from memory! (I can promise that will be the only joke pertaining to lost instructions in this review.)

Long story short, Kang the Conqueror has invaded famous locales in the Marvel universe and it’s up to your favorite super heroes to stop him. The cities have been placed in the world of Chronopolis, the hub city where you and your super hero pals will maneuver and try and stop Kang. You start out playing as the Guardians of the Galaxy in the tutorial level to get the feel of the controls.

The controls can be confusing at times but with a little practice, you’ll get the hang of it but that’s bound to happen when you get to play with several different characters. I found myself turning back into Peter Parker while playing as Spider Man by pressing the wrong button on the PlayStation 4 controller but like I said, with a little practice, that wouldn’t happen. People who are familiar with the Lego games will know that there is a lot to collect during gameplay such as Lego pieces, gold Lego pieces, hidden characters and so much more that it adds to the replay value of the game.

You need to play the episode/chapter first to unlock freeplay mode on it and then you’ll have the ability to play it again with other characters. There will be things that you won’t be able to complete the first time through with the “story” characters so freeplay mode will be the only way to unlock these features. An added bonus is finding Stan Lee in each level, similar to seeing what cameo he has in each Marvel movie. You also have the ability to explore anywhere you wish in the locations and you will need to if you want to find everything. Like I mentioned before, there are a lot of things to uncover in the game and a lot of Marvel franchises in the game.

There will even be a few characters that you didn’t expect to see in the game so you’ll have to play everything to find everything! If playing with friends is more your speed, you’ll have the option to play four-player local multiplayer to work together or against your group in challenges and the battle area so work on your moves and hone up your spidey sense! If you happen to get stuck during gameplay, you’ll be able to push the hint button and get gameplay hints from Wasp that should be able to give you the information you need to move ahead in the area.

The graphical styling looks just like you’re making a Lego still-motion movie with toys and that’s always been the charm with the Lego games. An issue I have is with the camera, which is terrible. There were times where the camera should have been easy to control and get in an easy to see something position but it took forever to position properly. In the rare instance, there was the issue where I couldn’t get the camera where I wanted at all. It didn’t ruin the gameplay for me but it did make things tough at times. Spider Man and Captain America in Lego form did enough for me to save the “at-times” horrible camera and I’m giving Lego Marvel Super Heroes 2 for the PlayStation 4 a 8/10. I would like to thank Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for the review code.

SCORE: 8/10
