I was able to play the Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind at Pax East this year. There were good things that I played in the demo as well as things that I didn’t care for but that’s why it was an early build and these things can be fixed. Fast-forward a few months from Pax East and we have the full version of the Elder Scrolls Online: Morrowind to review! Let’s get right into it!
For starters, I wasn’t a fan of the controls that were shown off during the player VS player demo at Pax East. Granted the demo at Pax was on an Xbox One controller and them review was on a PlayStation 4 controller but I’ll move on. The attack system is straightforward with light attacks and heavy attacks, blocks and dodges, and abilities and ultimate abilities just to show off the attack system. The attack system for the regular game is less complicated and organized better than the Pax East demo so it’s already doing better in my book.
New players should start with the Tutorial mode but you have the option of skipping it of you’ve already completed the mode with another character. This is a great feature that should be seen in more games, allowing you to skip the tutorial mode if you’ve already cleared it.
You’ll be able to create your own character and there is a new character in Morrowind, the Warden class, the nature-based race. There are all kinds of new features added to the game, such as the new dungeons, the new bosses, the Halls of Fabrication. You’ll have to use all of your skills to master these new features and there are plenty more than what I’ve mentioned here.
Like in all RPG’s, one of the best features is being able to explore the open world and you have the option to do that here too. You’ll be able to explore Tamriel right away, just be on your guard while exploring. You’ll have to master Crafting so you can survive in the wild. Crafting allows you to creating new weapons, clothing, potions, and food for examples. You’ll have to have the right profession to use the right craft if you want to use it!
Online mode is another great mode for RPG/online games and Elder Scrolls is no different. You’ll be able to team up to tackle a dungeon or form an alliance for the alliance war. You can also team up for Battlegrounds and show off how great your PvP team really is. You can also join a guild this way but you need to ask a Guild master for an invite.
The main story of Morrowind takes place in the Dark elf homeland but there is plenty to do. There will be quest icons on the map that will help you out and keep you from getting lost out there. There are other places that you’ll want to explore on the map as well but you’ll just have to find them out on your own.
There are plenty of RPG elements in the game and they range from creating your own characters at the start to learning how to fight so you don’t die. You will also have to learn, within your profession, how to craft things, also to keep you alive.
The landscape is huge and so is Vvardenfell. You will need to study the map so if you do decide to venture off, you don’t get lost. The graphics look fantastic and the voice acting sounds great too. You could gripe that the game is too story based/information driven but the Elder Scrolls games have been like this forever. The controls are much better than what was shown at Pax East and that was a welcome sight to see. The game has plenty of new additions that will add plenty of time for fans and newcomers of the game to enjoy. It’s these reasons that I’m giving The Elder Scrolls Online Morrowind for the PS4 at 8.0/10. I would like to thank Bethesda for the review material.
