Get Even Review

I recently received a review code from my friends at Bandai Namco for their game, Get Even. In the game, you play the role of Cole Black, a hired gun who for some reason has had his memory wiped clean. The game is a first person shooter as well as a survivor game in my opinion. During the game, “Cole” has to relive memories and figure out what is going on.

Get Even is a first person shooter that is built with the help of the unreal engine so it looks fantastic. Before you start out, you will have to set the brightness on your TV screen and like most horror/psych games, the darker the better. There will be times where things will happen to you where there will be an obvious explanation and then there will be times where you’ll find yourself thinking what the hell just happened?

Before you start, there are two difficulty settings for gameplay, Gentle and Traumatizing. Gentle allows you to experience memories in game safely as well as safer combat during gameplay. Traumatizing on the other hand, has you finding memories head on no matter what the situation, regardless of difficulty. This is the first step in your psych evaluation. Will you pick the easier difficulty setting or will you go the tougher route?

During the course of the game, you find yourself trapped and at the mercy of a mystery captor that brings you to an asylum. During your stay, you find the Pandora headset that helps you make your way through said facility. You also have the help of your smart phone and its applications. Your phone will be one of your key tools during your adventure. You will be able to use the phone to scan for items as well as information.

You can use it as a map and a black light to see footprints. You find out how to use them at the start of the game but it still is a hassle to use them sometimes. The scanner for example can only pick up evidence when the crosshair is green and it was tough to aim precisely. However, the controls will vibrate and green dots will appear on the scanner application the closer you get to evidence. You will need to learn how to use these apps quickly since there will be plenty of information to discover and the apps are the only ways to find them.

There is one other tool that you can use to help you in your journey and it turns out you were contracted to steal the prototype, the Corner Gun. The gun can bend corners with precision aiming. During times of crisis, action will slow time and you’ll be able to aim much easier as well as dodge things. The controls for the Corner Gun take a little getting used to. The toughest part at the start was trying to figure out how to change direction at certain times. Once you figure the basic controls out for the gun, you’ll be killing in no time! It is easy to lose your center so be careful if you’re relying on attacking someone and then you lose yourself.

Actions during gameplay will have consequences such as turning the power back on in the asylum or letting someone our of their asylum room. You might have to shoot the person you just helped rescue or the power being back on might release everyone in the building, you never know!

There were times where the camera let me down, like I mentioned with losing my center during aiming. It didn’t happen often but when it did, I was in a heap of trouble.

I’m giving Get Even for the PlayStation 4 an 8/10. I would like to thank Bandai Namco for the review code.
