One of my last appointments of E3 2017 was to see the game from Cliff Bleszinski, LawBreakers. This is a crazy first person shooter/multiplayer to the death. I think that covers the formal introductions, let’s get to it.
LawBreakers is crazy, fast paced first person shooting at its finest. You will need to be quick on the trigger and in your mind just so you know what’s going on and so you can survive. You play team matches (That’s what we did in the demo) trying to grab a ball and score a goal. The name of the game was Blitzball. This is another variation of capture the flag but that’s really the only similarities to other shooting games. You have jet packs on and you will need to master Omni-directional movement as well as combat. Who knows where the enemy will be coming from? You might have to line up the perfect shot of the enemy while they’re falling from the sky. Would you be able to take the shot and kill them?
Like most team/arena shooting games (one more similarity) each character in the game has skills that make them better than the others. Some move faster than the others whereas some have better base weapons. It will be up to you to figure out what works best for your play style and make it your own. Another factor is that since matches are played 5 on 5, you’ll need to figure out what characters work better for the situation. Will it be a long match or short for example?
During the hands-on, the PS4 froze on me and needed to be restarting so that wasn’t a good start but I won’t hold that against the system. After it was resolved, I jumped in with my team for Blitzball but it wasn’t going well. We were on the side of Law (you have the option to play for Law or the side of Breakers: going for blood) and you play to 8 in Blitzball. In terms of controls, if you have played one first person shooter, you have played them all.
I was still having aiming issues and that seemed like it was a problem with all the FPS games played on a PlayStation 4. The control stick aiming mechanic isn’t tight enough and everything goes all over the place when you’re trying to line up a shot. It didn’t hinder me nearly as much in LawBreakers as it did on other FPS games on the show floor because I was able to get quite a few kills, I just couldn’t figure out one of the simplest of tasks, how to grab the Blitzball. One piece of advice for players, fast characters will do well in this game since you have to be able to maneuver all over the location.
You will need to master all the skills if you want to be the best LawBreaker around these parts!
