The folks as Viz Media have done it again and sent me volume 1 and 2 of the anime series Hunter X Hunter to review. The first volume has episodes 1-13 on two discs and came in a metal box. The box was a little dented but that didn’t stop the DVDs from working perfectly.
The second volume has episodes 14-26 on it, also on two discs, but didn’t come packed in a metal box. You also get your hands on three post cards in each box set that have various locations from the Hunter X Hunter universe, which is a nice bonus for the box set. There are more extra features but I’ll mention those later.
Long story short, Gon, the main character of the Hunter X Hunter anime, wants to set out to become a Hunter, just like his father. He knows nothing of his father other than the fact that he is a Hunter but that fact intrigues Gon. He wants to become a Hunter to ask his father why he set out to become a Hunter while he (Gon) was at such a young age.
The first volume is just the Hunter exam and the second volume has the conclusion of the actual Hunter exam. During the Hunter exam Gon makes friends with a boy named Killua. During the exam you find out that he comes from a family of assassins and that will cause trouble for him during the exam but you’ll have to watch it to find out how.
Killua has to leave the Hunter exam and once Gon finds that out, as his friend, he needs to head out to find him. Killua went back to his home but it won’t be easy for Gon and friends to find Killua and bring him back to the outside world! In my opinion Hunter X Hunter has some filler episodes and moves at a slow pace sometimes but it wouldn’t be an anime series if it didn’t have these aspects built in.
These types of DVDs are getting the getting the hang of special features and the Hunter X Hunter DVDs were no different. There were the clean opening/closings and the English credits as well.
The features I always find interesting are the voice actor interviews. The first volume had an interview with Gon, Erica Mendez, and Killua, Cristina Vee. I always like to put a face to the voice, as I didn’t know what Erica Mendez looked like in person. I also like to hear the actor’s opinions on certain topics like voice acting as a career or in this case, how both actors went into the auditions for multiple roles. You can also look at an art gallery and see how your favorite characters from the series as well as some sketches.
Hunter X Hunter is an interesting anime that is a mix of mystery and action. It is no surprise why fans think so highly of the series. I would like to thank Viz Media for the review copies.
