Mages Of Mystralia Hands-On At Pax East

Mages Of Mystralia is a nice looking game that stars a young girl name Zia who finds out she can perform magic. Magic is frowned upon so she sets out on her own, thus your adventure begins.

During your adventure you will discover all kinds of magical abilities and spells and it’s up to you on how to use them. There are four types of spells, Immedi (melee) Creo (congering) Ego (self) and Actus (orb-projectiles) and you can modify these spells many, many ways. You can change their direction or their element for example.

The spells cost manna and you have a gage at the top of the screen right by your health bar. There are certain things that you need to change the attribute of your spell such as in the demo where you needed to change your fireball to become long range to hit a target to open the door.

You needed to change the attribute to make it long range, have it hit the switch and then change it back. You’ll have the ability to customize your spells during your adventure. The game has been compared to the Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time but I think A Link to the Past would be a more accurate comparison. The game has a top-down/semi top down look with a character that can use magic and find treasure chests while fighting monsters.

You will need to master all the magic/spells if you want to make it anywhere it this game. The controls are easy to pick up but like I said, it takes some time to learn the magic and master it. You will need to know what you’re doing when it comes to the magic spells later on in the game. The demo might let you get away with not knowing how to change an attribute on a spell but if you’re still doing that in say the 5th dungeon, you’ll have problems.

The finished game will have an orchestra for music but the demo didn’t have it ready, which was really the only thing wrong with it. Edward Greenwood is credited for writing the story as well as the lore in the game. That is a big deal because he is of Dungeons and Dragons fame and this feels like his area of expertise so he should be able to write something about magic.
