Little Nightmares Hands-On At Pax East

I was able to give Little Nightmares a test run at the Bandai Namco booth and it was pretty challenging. Once you got the feel for the game, it was pretty easy but that learning curve at the beginning of the demo is pretty high. You need to be quick on your feet and at the same time, avoiding the Chef monster inside the kitchen portion. Like I said, once you get the feel for the controls, it’s cake but that initial go through is tough.

When you first start out, you’re in Six’s bedroom and you need to figure out how to get out that room. There is a suitcase next to the bed and that can be used to open the door. After you get out of the room, you make your way to the kitchen and you have your interaction with the Chef.

You need to make you way through the kitchen, avoid him, and make it to the other side of the kitchen. Let me tell you that is easier said than done. There are times where you think you’re under the table and you’re not and then there are times where you think you can out run the Chef and he grabs you. After you get by the Chef, it’s smooth sailing through the demo!

You’re making your way through pitch-black areas and all you have to light the way is a lighter. The play area was short and small so this didn’t become a problem in the demo but I could see the lighter getting upgraded in the main game or having the lights come on in the house. I

will say that one of the more fun parts of the demo was getting the meat and grinding it into sausage and then swinging on it into the next room. That was creative and fun!

What I don’t like about the controls is that you need to use the shoulder buttons to grab and hold things. You needed to hold the right shoulder button the climb the shelves to gain access into one of the other rooms. It’s a pain to have to hold something for climbing but at least there isn’t a stamina bar!
